About our Specialist SEND Unit
School: Clements Primary Academy
Specialist Unit: Key Stage 2 Cognition and Learning
Number of places: 18
Sparrows and Starlings classes are located in our new SEND unit for Key Stage 2 children. The classes are staffed by a teachers and learning support assistants who have experience of working with children with moderate learning difficulties. This unit caters for children who are significantly below their peers in reading, writing and maths.
Overview
The unit will be an integrated part of the main school, enabling access to the main building, hall, playground and library. Children will be able to access the extensive outdoor space by a slope to enjoy an outdoor gym and range of resources. It is hoped that the children, with support, will be able to interact with their peers both at play and lunch, developing positive and rewarding relationships.
The needs of the individual child will be carefully assessed during the initial transition period as they begin to settle into their new class. A personalised curriculum will be written and developed overtime to ensure individual needs are met. When appropriate, this will include opportunities to join classes to learn alongside their peers. This may include lessons such as English, Mathematics and PE. The children will also be welcomed to assemblies and special events so that they feel very much part of the school.
Although the children will be expected to wear school uniform, adaptions can be made to support self-care and individual needs. Families will have access to the unit’s own page on Class Dojo and website so as to support regular communication and updates.
The children are taught in small groups for English and Maths according to what stage they are at. The children also have access to continuous provision both inside and outside of the classroom in our garden area. In the afternoons, the children access a broad and balanced curriculum and take part in History, Geography, R.E., D.T., Art, Science and computing. We spend a lot of time outside doing P.E., being active and going on walks. We are lucky enough to have class pets, 3 guinea pigs named Jack, Chinny and Star. P.E. is on a Tuesday and a Friday. The children take part in targeted interventions which help them to meet the outcomes on their EHCPs.
The children are taught by Mrs Hughes and supported by Mrs Fletcher, Miss Smith and Mrs Reynolds.
